Design Plan

Design Plans are what most people think of when working with a Garden Designer or Landscape Architect. It is a scaled plan view of the area with items located and clearly labeled. It provides enough information for the homeowner to elicit cost from contractors and installers, particularly for patios, walkways, and the plant material.

The Design Plan may include:

  • Hardscape items such as patios, walkways, seawalls, and other masonry items.
  • Location of fire features and water features.
  • Identification of pergolas and gazebos.
  • General kitchen layout, location and features such as grills, sink, and height of counters. It can also include  type of material selected.
  • Schematic location for irrigation and lighting.
  • Specific plant selections, sizes, and amounts for groundcover, perennials, shrubs, small trees, and shade trees. This may also be included in a separate service for a Planting Plan
  • Other items may include vegetable gardening area, dog run, ornamental planters, the location of a TV, etc...

Depending on the scope and situation, there might be other allied professionals that need to participate in the design plan as well. Frequently, these professional partners are identified during the  Concept/Master Planning process. Example of these could include an Architect who would will draw and locate the building or building modifications, while a civil engineer may include a grading plan or calculations for the the amount of pervious/impervious surface material on the lot. Lighting and irrigation professionals may be brought in on complicated, or premier sites. These professionals are an additional cost.

If construction details are needed, they are included in service called Detailed Design.  Examples include construction details for a pergola, a custom water feature, or a kitchen layout. Additionally, if the client wishes to have multiple bids for the overall job, or the work requires a permit, the Detailed Design service can thoughtfully communicate the intent and construction details.

Design Plans start at $2,500 to $5,000 up to 18% of the construction budget.
